Salvaged from a building that had fallen into disrepair in the state of Gujarat, this impressive Indian architectural lintel dates to the 19th century and is richly carved with symbolic imagery. Originally positioned above a doorway, it would have served both a protective and auspicious role within the home.
The composition depicts two elephants with riders, carved in relief at either end, flanking the central figure of the deity Ganesh. Ganesh, revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings, was commonly placed above entrances to bestow blessings and good fortune. Traces of the original painted surface remain throughout, with layers of weathered reds, blues, greens, and earthy tones contributing to its remarkable patina and depth of character.
Today, this lintel makes a powerful decorative statement. Whether displayed on a wall or mounted above a mantelpiece, it brings a strong sense of history, craftsmanship, and architectural presence to an interior.
