Carved Teak Kharal - Opium Grinder - Ca 1920

This beautifully carved early 20th century teak kharal from Rajasthan, India, was traditionally used for grinding and preparing opium. Hand-carved from a single piece of solid teak, it is a fascinating example of Indian folk craftsmanship, combining a practical everyday function with distinctive decorative detailing.

The elongated oval bowl is supported on a raised, gently flared pedestal base, with two boldly carved projecting handles featuring serrated edges and repeated circular motifs. Similar concentric circle designs decorate the exterior of the bowl, while the deeply hollowed interior has acquired a wonderfully smooth, dark patina through generations of use. 

Opium cultivation and consumption have a long history in Rajasthan, where the substance traditionally played a role in social gatherings, hospitality and certain ceremonial occasions. Known locally as amal, opium was sometimes prepared as a liquid infusion called amal pani, which could be shared during community gatherings and rituals. Wooden grinding vessels such as this were used in its preparation and were often treasured household possessions, passed down through successive generations.

Today, this unusual antique kharal makes a wonderfully characterful decorative object, equally suited to displaying small collected treasures or serving as a distinctive desk tidy for keys, coins and other everyday essentials.
