This vintage Marapachi Bommai wooden doll forms part of the traditional Golu display associated with the Navaratri festival in South India. Typically made as a pair representing a bride and groom, these figures hold deep cultural and emotional significance and are most commonly found in households across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Carved from wood and traditionally left unclothed, Marapachi Bommai dolls were given as part of a wedding trousseau by a mother to her newly married daughter. They symbolised the continuity of family life and were intended to mark the beginning of the bride’s own annual Golu celebrations in her new home. During Navaratri, the dolls would be displayed prominently, while at other times they were cherished as heirlooms and children’s play objects, often dressed in handmade clothes and finery.

Passed down through generations, these figures are regarded as proud family possessions rather than simple toys. Their surface shows the wear and patina of handling over time, adding to their authenticity and charm. Today, Marapachi Bommai dolls are highly collectible and make evocative decorative objects, offering a tangible connection to South Indian domestic ritual and tradition.

A comparable example is illustrated on page 122 of The Everyday Art of India by Robert F. Bussabarger and Betty Dashew Robins.
