Carved tribal chair from Nagaland, North East India. These chairs would have been used by the tribal leaders and elders.
Nagaland is a relatively inaccessible and unexplored area of India which borders with Myanmar. The people live in villages set throughout the jungle and until the introduction of Christianity in the 1960's, the people of Nagaland were headhunters, regularly going to war with other nearby villages. Dating from the early 20th century.
This chair unusually has metal lizards inset into it and is carved from a single piece of wood with a beautiful patina.
