This old South Indian coconut grater is from the state of Chettinad and dates to the 19th century. It is an excellent example of its style and is beautifully carved with floral motifs from a single block of jackfruit wood. It reflects the wealth and high quality artisanal work coming from South India driven by the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant caste.
It has beautiful carvings for such a functional piece and sports a wonderful rich patina from centuries of use. The iron grating scoop is in the shape of a hooded serpent.
Today, these make fantastic ornamental and curiosity pieces. A reminder beauty can be found in even the simplest of functional items.
