    Product Description & Specifications

    Title

This beautifully carved antique Indian seed drill has developed a wonderful patina over the decades. In Gujarat, it is called an orani (ઓરણી) and would have been used to sow seeds in the fields. Depicting an elephant on one side and parrots on the other, the carvings have been softened through over 100 years of repeated daily use. The particular style of seed drill was found in Gujarat and Maharashtra, particularly in Mer communities.

Like many things in India, seed drills were made for a practical purpose - beautifully carved by Marathi craftsmen in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Nowadays these seed drills are great used as a candlestand or just as a beautiful decorative object.

A similar example can be seen in "Folk Art & Culture of Gujarat: A Guide to the Collection of the Shreyas Folk Museum of Gujarat" by Jyotindra Jain - figure 197.
