This hand-carved limed mango wood chair takes its inspiration from the ceremonial seating and marble thrones found in the palaces of Rajasthan, reinterpreted here as a striking single chair for contemporary interiors. The high back, sweeping sides, turned legs and carved finials give the piece an impressive architectural presence.
The carving is the real focus. The raised back is centred with a kalasha-inspired motif surrounded by deeply carved scrolling foliage, while a pierced jali panel adds lightness to the design. The curved side panels are decorated with bold floral and foliate carving, complemented by further carved decoration around the seat and apron. These flowing forms draw on the decorative traditions of Gujarati and Malabar coastal furniture, where elaborate floral carving became an important feature of chests and furniture associated with Indian Ocean trade.
A pale limed finish softens the overall appearance and settles into the recesses of the carving, emphasising the extensive handwork without overwhelming the design.
With its generous proportions, this chair would make particularly effective ceremonial or statement seating. It is well suited to Indian weddings, mandaps and reception styling, as well as boutique hotels, interior design projects or as an individual feature chair within the home.
