This gilt black lacquer chinoiserie stacking box was made in the early 19th Century in Canton for export to The West. Decorated in delicate gilt and black lacquer, it comprises three stackable layers that sit within a handle case. Each layer contains arrangements of threads, bobbins, and boxes collected over many years by an avid collector. Scissors, a tape measure and threads are also contained. The bottom layer has a compartmentalised drawer.

This style of chinoiserie was made in Canton for export to wealthy members of the British Georgian & American upper class in the Qing dynasty. This intricate and detailed work was made for export to Britain when Chinoiserie was all the rage in the early 19th century. Export jewelry cabinets, games boxes & tea caddies were also made. This form is highly unusual and was likely a custom order by a wealthy individual.

These pieces are fragile pieces of history. This box has some fading to the lacquer in places due to long exposure to sunlight. This can be seen in the photos. This sewing box has been checked over in our workshop and small restorations made to stop the aging process.
