Glazed Cabinet - Catalpa - 19thC from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty. They were usually made from elm, oak or catalpa and occasionally in camphorwood. Thse fittings are made from brass and are in the form of bat. Which is an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture. These cabinets were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
