This fine antique Chinese red lacquer wedding cabinet originates from Shanxi province and dates to the 19th century, Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Finished in the perfect ‘Peking red’, the surface displays a deep, warm tone that has developed a beautiful softness over time. The lacquer is original, with faint traces of historic painted decoration still visible beneath the surface, adding depth and quiet character to the façade. A traditional circular brass lock plate anchors the centre, while the tall, elegant proportions and restrained form reflect the refined aesthetic of northern Chinese furniture.

Our skilled workshop team has sensitively restored this piece, carefully consolidating the lacquer to stabilise and halt the ageing process while preserving its authenticity. The interior offers generous storage space, divided by two shelves, making it both practical and visually striking.

Lacquer has a long and important history in Chinese furniture, used for over 2,000 years. It is a natural resin derived from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree. Burgundy tones are most common, followed by red, while black is less frequently seen. Colours such as green, blue, yellow and pink are typically associated with modern reproductions. In this case, the cabinet features a rich red lacquer ground with subtle evidence of decorative embellishment, while the sides remain characteristically plain.
