This beautifully decorated orange reproduction Chinese porcelain vase is decorated in iron red glaze, sometimes called coral red. This style was a development from sancai porcelain of the Ming period and came to prominence in the early Qing dynasty.
This vase depicts intricately painted bats, considered a symbol of luck in China. This is due to the word for bat (fu 蝠) and good fortune (fu 福 sounding identical. Red bats like these spread good fortune, spreading, longevity, wealth, good health & virtue. Bats are considered very self sufficient and a symbol of independence.
