The Tang dynasty had its capital at Chang an which is modern day Xian. Xian was the most populous city in the world at the time. It is regarded by historians as a high point in Chinese civilization and was considered the golden age of literature and art. The Tang dynasty was the second great dynasty of Chinese history that was able to unify a vast territory. It spread its culture to the surrounding countries and absorbed and adapted the cultures of surrounding states and peoples. A great part of the Tang aristocracy even was of non-Chinese, especially Turkish origin merchants from Inner Asia, like Sogdians and Persians dwelled in the quarters of the capital Period 618 - 907 AD
