This 19th century sideboard comes from Tianjin, the historic port city of northern China. Its restrained, practical design is characteristic of traditional Qing dynasty furniture, when cabinets such as this were used both for everyday household storage and as altar cabinets associated with family ancestor worship.

Constructed from red elm and catalpa wood, the cabinet has developed a wonderfully rich, warm patina through generations of use. Remnants of the original dark burgundy and black lacquer remain across the sides and other areas of the cabinet, contrasting beautifully with the exposed grain and honey-brown tones of the timber.

Two panelled doors open to reveal a generous interior storage area with a shelf, while two drawers above provide useful additional storage. The front is finished with substantial square brass fittings, including hinges, drawer handles and a distinctive central locking plate. The original-style locking bar running through the central fittings is removable to allow the doors to open.

A wonderfully characterful piece of antique Chinese furniture, combining simple Qing dynasty proportions, attractive timber and beautifully aged original surfaces.
