This antique Chinese kang cabinet is a special piece and is made in the traditional Ming style. It dates to the 19th century (Qing dynasty, 1644 - 1911). Constructed with burr elm wood panels and a northern elm (yumu) frame - these cabinets from Tianjin are considerably rarer to find with burr wood.
Burr wood (yingmu 樱木) is an abnormal aberration on a tree. Burrs were considered valuable wood by furniture makers who used them for central feature panels.
Kang cabinets like this one are ideal for use beneath a TV or sound system and date from the 19th century. These were used beside the Kang which was a raised stone platform used as a bed or lounging area in wealthy homes. Traditionally, this was heated from underneath in the winter.
