This elegant antique Chinese kang cabinet from Tianjin is a refined example of traditional Qing dynasty furniture, crafted in the enduring Ming style. Its beautifully balanced proportions and low profile reflect its original use alongside the kang—a raised, heated platform that formed the heart of northern Chinese domestic life. The cabinet’s striking façade is defined by richly figured burr elm panels, whose intricate swirling grain was highly prized and reserved for feature sections in fine furniture.

Constructed with a solid northern elm (yumu) frame, this piece demonstrates both durability and craftsmanship, while the brass fittings provide a subtle decorative contrast to the warm tones of the timber. The arrangement of drawers and cupboards offers practical and versatile storage, with a central compartment flanked by additional storage spaces and topped by a row of small drawers. Today, its long, low form makes it particularly well suited as a media unit or statement sideboard, blending seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors.
