Brass Temple Bucket - Ca 1930

This antique Indian brass bucket dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and was traditionally used to hold holy water for Hindu puja ceremonies. Robust and practical, vessels of this type were widely used in both domestic and ceremonial settings across India.

Often referred to as “campaign buckets,” examples such as this were also valued for their durability and portability and were commonly used by travelling parties and military expeditions throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The bucket is made from heavy-gauge brass with copper rivets securing the handle lugs and features a sturdy arched carry handle designed for regular use.

The surface displays a beautiful warm patina developed over decades of handling. Subtle incised ring lines encircle the body, while an engraved inscription in Hindi appears just below the rim, adding a personal and historical element to the piece. Today, the bucket works equally well as a decorative object, planter, or log bucket, bringing authentic character and history to an interior.
