These old brass buckets would once have contained holy water used in Hindu puja ceremonies, and bears engraved lines circling the bucket. Buckets of this type are often referred to as 'campaign buckets' as they were used by armies in India during the 19th and early 20th centuries, valued for their durability and portability.

Made from heavy-gauge brass with copper rivets and a solid cast handle lug, it would have been designed to withstand regular use, whether in a ceremonial, domestic, or institutional setting. Its warm, timeworn patina and simple incised ring decoration give it character far beyond its utilitarian origins.
