This old brass bucket carries layers of history, both utilitarian and devotional. Stamped on the handle lug with the maker's mark S.W.J. above a swastika symbol, it reflects the Indian use of the swastika as an ancient emblem of good fortune and prosperity. Constructed from heavy-gauge brass with copper rivets and a rolled rim, it belongs to the robust tradition of so-called 'campaign buckets,' widely used in India during the 19th and 20th centuries by armies, municipalities, and temples alike.
Adding further significance, the body bears Gujarati inscriptions. The earlier, fainter line - written in Gujarati/Modi script - dedicates the vessel to Shri Thakurji (Lord Krishna), linking it directly to temple ritual use. Beneath, a clearer modern inscription records the name Seth Jayantilal Thokasandasji Parekh with the date 5·3·87 (5 March 1987), marking a rededication by the Parekh merchant family, a community long associated with temple donations.
With its maker's mark, auspicious symbol, and layered inscriptions, this vessel bridges the practical world of Indian craftsmanship with the devotional traditions of Gujarati temple culture. Today, it would make a striking decorative piece - whether as a planter, wastepaper bin, or simply displayed for its layered history.
