Dhokra Oil Lamp From Chhattisgargh - 1920

This striking Dhokra brass oil lamp from Chhattisgarh in Eastern India is a wonderful example of the tribal metalworking traditions of central India. Hand-cast using the ancient lost-wax technique, the lamp combines ritual symbolism with decorative artistry, creating a sculptural object that is as appealing today as it would have been in a traditional household shrine over a century ago.

The lamp is centred around a deep yoni-shaped oil reservoir with an elongated wick channel, supported on a cast stambha pedestal decorated with bands of geometric ornament. A stylised peacock rises proudly from the rear of the reservoir, its raised tail detailed with feather-like motifs, while scrolling arms support small suspended bells that would have produced a gentle chime when moved. Unusually, two further hyper-stylised peacocks sit on the yoni channel rather than the standard Shiva lingam shapes. 

Traditionally fuelled with ghee or oil and fitted with a cotton wick, lamps such as this formed an important part of daily devotional practice throughout rural India. The rich surface patina and subtle irregularities of the casting reflect the handmade nature of the piece and the enduring skill of the Dhokra artisans who created it.

Crafted using the traditional cire perdue (lost-wax) process, each lamp is unique. The original wax model is destroyed during casting, ensuring that no two examples are ever exactly alike. Today, these lamps are highly regarded for both their cultural significance and their distinctive sculptural qualities.
