This handsome antique Anglo-Burmese military chest dates to the 19th century and is crafted from beautifully patinated teak, richly decorated with delicate brass wire inlay characteristic of Burmese workmanship. The front panels feature finely etched ornamental motifs framed within geometric borders, while the solid brass lock plate and fittings add both strength and visual presence.
Military chests such as this were commissioned by officers of the British Indian Army to transport their personal possessions and campaign equipment while travelling across the subcontinent and beyond. Built to endure the rigours of long journeys, they were constructed from robust teak and reinforced with brass hardware. The lid is fitted with an interior chain to protect the hinges when opened.
Inside, the chest provides a generous main storage compartment alongside a narrower side section, allowing for practical organisation of belongings. With its rich patina, fine craftsmanship and strong historical character, this chest also makes an excellent coffee table or storage piece within a contemporary interior.
