This antique Indian brass bound chest dates to the 19th century. The style is from Gujarat in Northern India and would have been used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewelry & cash. There is an interior box for storing candles which would have been valuable, especially in the darker times of the year.

This Indian chest is constructed from teak wood and has its original brass fittings and handles. The brass handles on the side are original and are traditionally found on British military chests hinting at who could have been the original owner could have been. A sturdy chain that prevents the lid from falling open and straining the hinges. Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced Indian design. The secret compartment is the most interesting thing about this. When the two left drawers are removed, access to a secret compartment is revealed accessible by a hidden switch at the back of the drawers.
