A beautiful late 19th century brass paan box from Rajasthan, is an excellent example of the pierced work which became prominent at the end of the late 19th century. Finely pierced throughout with intricate jali decoration, the box is adorned with betel leaves (indicating the original purpose of this box) and delicate openwork panels that create a lace-like effect across every surface. Elevated on feet and fitted with carrying handles and an elaborate clasp, it is both a functional object and an exceptional example of decorative metalwork.
Traditionally used for storing betel nut, paan leaves and the various ingredients required for paan preparation, such boxes occupied an important role in domestic hospitality across India. The beautifully organised interior retains its original configuration, including fixed compartments and a removable tray designed to separate and present ingredients. The pierced decoration would have helped promote airflow, keeping contents fresh while simultaneously displaying the owner's taste and status.
Today, this elegant box makes a superb decorative object, offering both historical significance and exceptional craftsmanship. The intricate jali work and warm aged brass patina exemplify the refined metalworking traditions for which Rajasthan is renowned.
