The rich history of the Persian carpet goes back to at least 400BC when according to Xenophon, they were so highly prized they were often used as diplomatic gifts. Today, they have gained notoriety across the globe for their beautiful, colourful and complex designs and are well known for their quality and durability with the potential for a single rug to last centuries given the right care.
This particular rug is known as a 'Bownat' and is woven by the nomadic kashgai or Qashgai peoples. Traditionally they weave the rugs from the wool provided by their own sheep which they move from region to region to graze alongside other herd animals such as horses. Even though this rug is nearly 100 years old, it's still in very good condition and has the potential to last many many years given the right care.
