Blue & White Porcelain Lotus Mouth Vase

This elegant Blue & White Lotus Mouth Vase is a faithful reproduction of an imperial Chinese porcelain design from the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor (1722–1735). Handcrafted in Jingdezhen, the vase combines refined proportions with exquisite hand-painted decoration, reflecting the sophistication for which Yongzheng porcelain is renowned.

The rounded body is richly decorated with scrolling lotus flowers and foliage in underglaze cobalt blue, while two finely modelled lion mask handles with mock rings adorn the shoulders. The tall neck is finished with decorative bands inspired by traditional Chinese textiles and waves, culminating in a beautifully moulded lotus pod-shaped rim, its gently scalloped petals giving the vase its distinctive silhouette.

In Chinese culture, the lotus flower is one of the most revered symbols, representing purity, spiritual enlightenment and the ability to rise above adversity. Emerging immaculate from muddy waters, it became closely associated with scholars, royalty and Buddhist philosophy, making it a favourite decorative motif on imperial porcelain.

Each vase is hand-thrown on the potter's wheel before being meticulously hand-painted by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen using traditional techniques passed down through generations. China's porcelain capital since 1004 AD, Jingdezhen has produced the finest ceramics for over a millennium. Its extraordinary contribution to ceramic history has recently been recognised with the inscription of the Jingdezhen Handicraft Porcelain Industry Sites as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Porcelain occupies a unique place in Chinese history. While pottery has been made in China for over 15,000 years, true porcelain is generally believed to have emerged during the Han Dynasty (202 BC–220 AD). Today, Jingdezhen continues this remarkable tradition, producing porcelain that celebrates centuries of artistic excellence and technical mastery.

The original Yongzheng vase that inspired this reproduction is among the most desirable of Qing Dynasty porcelains. Comparable examples have achieved over US$2.9 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong and US$1.2 million at Skinner Auctions, reflecting the enduring admiration for this elegant imperial design.
