Blue & White Porcelain Ginger Jar with Peacocks Design. Peacocks can represent many things in Chinese art but are often associated with divinity, culture, beauty and the goddess Guan Yin. Ginger Jars are steeped in centuries of Chinese culture and history. Even though pottery developed in China 15,000 years ago, most experts believe that true porcelain - which also originated in China - didn't emerge in the region until the Han Dynasty -(202 BC to 220 AD.

Blue and white Ginger Jars are glazed using a transparent porcelain glaze dating back to the Tang Dynasty - 618 - 907
It is believed that the Chinese began creating porcelain Ginger Jars around that time. This one is from Jingdezhen, which is still the centre for the best quality porcelain.
During the Ming Dynasty the Emperor set up his famous imperial kilns
