These 19th-century Indian doors originate from Bikaner in Rajasthan and are constructed from solid roheda wood, reinforced with substantial hand-forged iron straps, studs and corner brackets. Once richly painted, generations of exposure to the intense sun and dry climate of the Thar Desert have naturally bleached the surface.
The quality of the carving is particularly fine. An elaborate carved surround frames the upper section of the doors, with stylised peacocks amongst scrolling foliage, while the central vertical stile is densely carved with floral and foliate decoration. The contrast between this delicate carving and the heavy ironwork gives the doors enormous character.
Bikaner, in northern Rajasthan, is renowned for its highly decorative architecture and tradition of skilled carving and craftsmanship. The doors are made from roheda, a dense indigenous hardwood traditionally used throughout the drier regions of Rajasthan and valued for its durability in the desert climate.
Our experienced team can advise on incorporating these doors into your home. Suitable hinges can be supplied for a small additional charge, or wall hangers can be added on request if the doors are to be displayed as architectural wall art.
