This elegant 19th century poplar console table comes from Shanxi province and was originally crafted as a scholar's desk. Its clean lines and understated form reflect the refined simplicity valued in Chinese literati culture, where such pieces were used for writing, study, and contemplation.
The surface shows a beautifully worn patina from years of use, while the wood has been gently bleached to reveal the natural grain of the poplar. Three practical drawers, each fitted with round brass pulls, provide useful storage. The table retains subtle decorative flourishes in the form of shaped aprons at the legs, adding a touch of refinement without detracting from its overall simplicity. Today, this versatile piece would serve equally well as a console, writing desk, or side table.
