This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. They were often used as scholars' tables for taking notes and transcripts at local courthouses. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables beside a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs on each side of a mantelpiece.

Most flower stands from Jiangsu were lacquered in a burgundy lacquer. Remains of the original lacquer can still be seen in places. Its frame and legs are made from cypress (baimu), the middle shelf is cedar wood and the top is blackwood (hongmu). The majority of this style of furniture from this region is red elm (jumu) making this table unusual. It dates to the 19th century.

With better quality tables such as this piece, there is a raised drip tray to prevent spillages of liquid onto floors and a cracked ice shelf. Both require considerable carpentry skills to produce.
