This elegant black lacquer cabinet originates from Shanxi province in northern China and dates to the 19th century. Often described in the West as a “wedding cabinet”, examples of this type were more accurately conceived as scholar’s cabinets, used for the storage of books, scrolls, and treasured objects within an educated household. The deep black surface, created from natural lacquer derived from the Rhus verniciflua tree, has matured into a softly burnished patina through generations of use.
The painted panels are arranged in the manner of a bogutu, or “Hundred Antiques” composition, depicting an assemblage of scholar’s objects and auspicious emblems. Visible motifs include a go board (weiqi) symbolising intellect and strategic cultivation; vases (ping), homophonous with peace; pomegranates expressing the wish for many sons; flowing ribbons denoting continuity; a scholar’s rock associated with contemplation; an unfurled hand scroll reinforcing literary refinement; archaistic bronze-style vessels; and a stylised lingzhi fungus emblem of longevity. Butterflies and floral sprays to the lower panel further suggest joy and harmonious union. Together, these elements form a visual language celebrating scholarship, prosperity, and cultivated virtue central to Qing dynasty domestic culture.
The interior reveals a practical and thoughtfully arranged storage configuration with a recessed central compartment, two shelves, and a pair of fitted drawers to the upper section. Traces of original floral-decorated paper lining remain intact on the interior panels, offering rare and evocative evidence of its original decorative scheme. Both functional and painterly, this cabinet stands as a refined example of northern Chinese lacquer furniture rooted in literati culture.
