Black Lacquer Chest Of Drawers From Shanxi - 19th Century

This Chinese provincial country chest is from Shanxi province in Northern China. It has retained its original black lacquered finish and original iron hardware.

Chest of drawers like these were probably custom made for a wealthy farming family and were black lacquered. The majority of drawers are original. 

It dates from the 19th century, is over 150 years old, and was constructed from elm wood. The carvings are in the traditional Shanxi style.
