This elegant 19th century Chinese altar table from Shanxi Province is a refined example of traditional domestic furniture used in ancestor worship. Crafted from prized nanmu wood—valued for its durability and fine grain—the table retains a beautifully timeworn presence, enhanced by its softly faded black lacquer. The long, narrow proportions are characteristic of altar tables, designed to sit beneath ancestral portraits where offerings such as incense and joss sticks would be placed for the well-being of the household.
Its practical yet balanced design features a bank of seven drawers—three larger drawers above and four smaller drawers below—each fitted with simple metal ring pulls. The arrangement adds both visual rhythm and functional storage, making this piece as useful today as it was historically. The worn lacquer and exposed wood tones give it a warm, rustic character that works effortlessly in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
