This cute bijou 19th-century console table comes from a farmhouse in Shanxi province and is crafted from northern elm wood (yumu 榆木). Still coated in its original black lacquer, the table retains a striking, time-worn patina that enhances its authenticity and charm. With three drawers set into the apron, it offers both beauty and practical storage.

Made in the provincial style, this piece was traditionally used as an altar table for ancestor worship. Families would hang portraits of their ancestors above the table and light joss sticks placed on the surface, ensuring the well-being and good fortune of the household. Its slim proportions make it ideal for modern interiors, particularly as a statement piece in a hallway or dining space.
