Chinese black glazed storage jars like these originate from Shanxi province and date to the late 19th century and early 20th century. They were used for storing rice wine, vinegar & oils.

This piece is around 150 years old and is marked with the characters 'yuan', 'sheng' & 'xi' - the latter meaning west. It is likely the name of the owner this jar was made from.

This piece would look fantastic in a contemporary home with dried flowers or planted with tall houseplants.
