Black 3 Drawer Kneehole Desk From Shanxi - 19th Century

This small and practical Chinese kneehole desk is a wonderful example of late Qing craftsmanship, and would work brilliantly in a hallway, home office, or smaller room. Crafted from northern Chinese elm (yumu 榆木), it features a black lacquer finish that originates from Shanxi province - an area known for its coal mining heritage. Historically, local coal was mixed with lacquer to achieve this rich, dark surface. Over the past 140 years, the lacquer on the tabletop has worn naturally through continual use, leaving behind a beautifully tactile patina that reflects its history.

The desk€™s compact proportions are matched by its rare three-drawer design - a more functional layout than typical Chinese antique furniture, possibly influenced by Western traders of the time. Though the drawer interiors have been replaced during its lifetime, the brass ring handles remain original.
