This antique Tibetan butter churn, crafted from willow and pine, dates to the 19th century and reflects the enduring traditions of life on the Tibetan plateau. Butter churning was central to daily life in Tibetan households, with churns like this used to make yak butter - an essential ingredient in both food and ritual, from butter tea to butter lamps offered in monasteries.
The churn is formed from a hollowed pine log, reinforced with willow bands that are hand-carved in a twisting, knotted form. Centuries of use have given the surface a deep, polished patina, while the natural wear tells the story of its utilitarian origins. Today, this piece stands as both a decorative object and a reminder of Tibet's pastoral culture, making it an evocative accent in interiors that blend history with design.
