This small painted storage chest from 18th-century Central Tibet is a rare and visually captivating piece. Traditionally used in both homes and monasteries, such chests served as essential storage for textiles, manuscripts, and ritual objects. Richly decorated in hues of red, gold, and black colours symbolising protection, abundance, and spiritual vitality in Tibetan Buddhist art - it exudes both presence and purpose.

The central motif on the front panel depicts a sacred lotus vase from which rises a radiant bouquet of wish-fulfilling jewels (norbu) and stylised peony blossoms - symbols of spiritual wealth, purity, and enlightenment. Framing this auspicious offering are two large golden chrysanthemums, each intricately painted with layered petals and flowing tendrils. These enduring floral forms, often associated with longevity and wisdom, are set within a dramatic red and gold cartouche bordered by dark scrolling vines.

The imagery, painted onto fabric applied over wood, retains remarkable vibrancy. Traces of original decoration remain on the side panels, while the blackened top and back suggest the piece was designed to rest against a wall. Crafted from pine or cedar, the chest features sturdy dovetail joinery and its original iron clasp. Worn edges and softened contours speak to centuries of use and reverence.

A beautifully preserved ritual object, richly symbolic and deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
