This beautifully painted antique Qinghai sideboard dates to the 19th century and brings together Qinghai & Chinese themes. Painting on Qinghai furniture is second only to Tibetan painting and brings together traditional Mongolian & Chinese themes. The original paintings depict traditional scenes of peonies surrounded by censers & vases. These were all items known broadly as 'scholarly objects' which denoted the scholarly status of the owner. The peony was considered the 'king of flowers' and was associated with the Imperial family during the Tang dynasty (618 - 907 AD) leading to it becoming a status symbol depicting wealth & honor.

Qinghai sideboards have become more difficult to find in recent years. This piece has developed a wonderful patina over time and various notches and wear blend into this giving it great character.

These cabinets were used by nomadic people for the storage of clothes and bedding or grain. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.

From Qinghai province - China.
