Painted Marwar Window Shutters From Jodhpur - Late 18th Century

These beautifully preserved window shutters originate from Jodhpur in the Marwar region of Rajasthan and date to the late 18th century. Painted in the distinctive black ground palette associated with Jodhpur’s courtly and domestic interiors, they depict two elegant female figures framed in arched niches, each accompanied by animals and flowering trees of life. The courtly attire, almond shaped eyes, and poised gestures reflect the influence of the Marwar miniature tradition, while the botanical motifs recall the murals found within Mehrangarh Fort and nearby havelis.

Created for a wealthy merchant’s or noble household, these shutters would once have adorned an internal courtyard window, enriching the home with auspicious imagery. The detailed floral painting, the stylised animals beneath each tree, and the warm mineral pigments all speak to a refined yet vernacular artistic tradition. A historic repair to the top of the central vertical bar remains visible, offering further authenticity and insight into the shutters’ long history of use. Their original surface survives with remarkable depth, providing a vivid glimpse into the decorative culture of 18th century Rajasthan.
