This rare 19th-century grass-cutting knife from the Terai region of Nepal is a wonderful example of how everyday village tools were elevated through skilled craftsmanship. Made for practical agricultural use, the curved iron blade was designed for cutting grasses and vegetation, while the accompanying teak wood sheath provided protection when not in use.

What makes this piece particularly special is the beautifully hand-carved holder. Decorated with intricate geometric and floral motifs, the sheath reflects the artistic traditions of Terai craftsmen, who transformed even the most utilitarian objects into works of folk art. The rich patina of the wood and iron, developed through decades of use and handling, adds further depth and authenticity.

Today, examples such as this are increasingly difficult to find and are prized by collectors of tribal, rural and ethnographic artefacts. Displayed on a shelf, desk or cabinet, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and craftsmanship of 19th-century Nepal.
