This charming painted sideboard originates from Inner Mongolia and dates to the circa 1920. Crafted from pine and retaining delicate traces of its original hand-painted decoration, it offers a rare glimpse into the nomadic material culture of northern China. Traditionally used for storing clothing, bedding, or grain, such cabinets often doubled as altar chests, forming the focal point of ancestor worship in the home.
The front panels, now modified for improved accessibility, would originally have opened via a top hatch€”typical of early Mongolian cabinetry. The hand-painted panels depict elegant domestic scenes and floral arrangements, framed with a deep cobalt blue border. The lower section features two drawers with original metal ring pulls. Its worn, chalky surface adds a beautiful patina, complementing the simplicity of its rustic pine frame. Once opened, the interior consists of a large space separated by a shelf.
