Japanese Mizuya Dansu From Gifu - Meiji Period

This impressive Japanese mizuya dansu originates from Gifu Prefecture and dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912). Mizuya dansu were traditionally used in Japanese kitchens for the storage of food, crockery and cooking utensils, combining a remarkable amount of practical storage within a relatively compact cabinet.

The chest is constructed with a hinoki cypress frame and drawer fronts, with lighter cryptomeria (sugi) panels to the interior. The rich, dark patina of the timber is complemented by traditional black iron handles, lock plates and substantial decorative ironwork.

A particularly attractive feature is the arrangement of sliding slatted doors, which open to reveal useful cupboard compartments. Numerous drawers of different sizes provide further storage, while a small lockable compartment to the lower right conceals two additional drawers, creating a secret storage area within the chest.

Like many large Japanese tansu, the cabinet was cleverly designed to separate into two sections, allowing it to be moved more easily through the narrow interiors of traditional Japanese houses. The horizontal slatted construction to the sides adds further character and gives the piece a strong architectural quality.

A wonderfully practical antique with exceptional storage, this mizuya would work particularly well as a kitchen or dining-room cabinet, linen cupboard or statement storage piece.
