This patinated 19th-century iron-bound chest originates from Gujarat, western India. Constructed from solid teak, it has developed a wonderfully rich, dark surface through generations of use, with areas of wear revealing the warmth and grain of the timber beneath.

The chest retains its original hand-forged iron hardware, including reinforcing straps around the corners, a central hasp and side carrying handle. These practical iron fittings strengthened the chest and helped protect its contents while being moved or transported.

Lifting the hinged lid reveals a generous open storage compartment. To one side is an original fitted internal box with a sliding hatch, providing a separate concealed space for smaller or more valuable possessions. A traditional iron retaining chain prevents the heavy lid from opening too far and protects the original hinges.

The restrained construction and substantial proportions give this chest a particularly appealing utilitarian character. Today it would work beautifully as a small coffee table, blanket chest or practical storage piece, while retaining all the character and craftsmanship of its original use.
