This 19th century Indian teak chest combines robust construction with expert carpentry, making it equally suited as a substantial coffee table or a blanket chest. Built to protect valuable possessions during everyday life and long-distance travel, its heavy iron strapwork and solid teak construction have enabled it to survive generations of use while developing a wonderfully rich patina.
The front is decorated with rows of hand-forged iron bindings and striking brass boss mounts, creating a bold geometric façade that reflects the practical elegance of traditional Indian craftsmanship. The gently domed lid is reinforced with iron straps and opens to reveal a generous single storage compartment, ideal for blankets, cushions or household items.
Inside, the original iron chain supports the lid when open, a thoughtful feature commonly found on quality antique chests of the period. Every surface bears the marks of age and use, from the mellow teak grain to the worn ironwork, giving the piece an authenticity and character that cannot be replicated.
Its combination of practical storage, architectural ironwork and warm, time-worn timber makes this an exceptional statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
