Evocative and finely crafted, this freestanding Bastar toran dates to the mid 20th century and is a striking example of tribal ironwork from central India. Traditionally torans were made as decorative and talismanic objects, imbued with protective and auspicious meaning, and this example has been thoughtfully mounted on a forged iron stand, allowing it to be displayed as a sculptural screen or room divider.
Formed as a rhythmic grid of horizontal bands, the composition is populated with a lively procession of stylised human figures and animals drawn from the natural world, each rendered in an elegantly minimal silhouette characteristic of Bastar tribal metalwork. The repetition of figures creates a strong visual cadence, while subtle variations in pose give the piece movement and narrative interest.
Suspended from the lower edges of each band are small iron pendants that introduce texture and gentle movement, occasionally producing a soft sound when disturbed. The surface shows a richly aged patina consistent with age and use, enhancing its raw, earthy character. Today, this toran works beautifully as a freestanding sculptural statement, equally suited to contemporary interiors or more eclectic, layered spaces.
