Painted Teak Votive Panel From Andhra Pradesh - 19th Century

This beautifully carved teak votive panel originates from Andhra Pradesh in South India and dates from the 19th century. Traditionally created by tribal communities to decorate the walls of village homes and shrines, panels such as this were both architectural and symbolic, bringing colour, craftsmanship and spiritual presence into domestic spaces.

Hand-carved from solid teak, the panel features a deeply recessed central opening framed by geometric borders and decorative relief carving. Traces of the original polychrome paint survive across the surface, with warm reds, ochres and earthy pigments softened by time and weathering. At the top, a carved floral roundel sits amongst flowing foliate motifs, lending the piece a strong sculptural quality and rich visual texture.

The naturally worn surface, aged patina and remnants of pigment give this panel exceptional character and authenticity. Whether displayed individually or grouped with similar panels as wall art, it brings warmth, history and a distinctive folk-art aesthetic to an interior.
