This impressive painted teak singhasan, or deity throne, dates to the 19th century and would have been used for worship within an Indian home or temple. Singhasan literally means “lion throne” and is a term traditionally used for a throne or elevated seat for a deity.

Three broad steps lead up to the raised platform where a deity statue would have been placed, sheltered beneath an ornate canopy supported by carved and turned columns. Scalloped edging, carved details and small finials decorate the structure throughout.

The original painted surface is particularly appealing, with layers of turquoise, green, yellow and red worn and faded through generations of use. A small door to one side opens to reveal a concealed storage compartment within the altar, which would have been useful for keeping items associated with worship.
