This carved Indian teak panel from a Ratha Yatra chariot depicts a Nandi bull and linga-yoni. Nandi is the vehicle of Lord Shiva and statues of Nandi are often found at the entrances to Hindu temples. Linga-Yoni is the combination of the abstract representation of the Hindu god & goddess Shiva & Shakti. Together they symbolise the eternal divine process of creation. This is depicted in Chinese philosophy as the Yin & Yang.
Ratha Yatra chariots are found mostly in Tamil Nadu, South India, and enormous temples on wheels are drawn through the streets by hundreds of people. They are decorated with hundreds of religiously significant images. Originally this piece would have been coated with pitch (a black tar-like substance) of which remnants can still be seen.
