This early 19th-century painted teak house shrine from Gujarat is a finely crafted example of domestic devotion, created to enshrine a household’s favourite deity. The surface displays beautifully layered generations of paint in deep reds, ochres, creams and traces of verdigris, giving the piece a wonderfully time-worn patina. The central doors open to reveal the sanctum where the deity figure would have been placed, offering a glimpse into the intimate spiritual life of a Gujarati home.
Architecturally, the shrine shows strong Mughal influence in its cusped arch, pierced brackets and ornate foliate carving. The turned front columns add graceful verticality and retain fragments of their original polychrome. Designed to be easy to assemble and disassemble, shrines like this were sometimes moved between rooms or taken on family journeys.
A striking and highly decorative devotional object, it stands beautifully as a sculptural display piece, rich with cultural history and craftsmanship.
