This beautifully timeworn carved teak Nandi bull dates to the 19th century and originates from Rajasthan in southern India. Nandi, the bull, is the sacred mount and loyal companion of Lord Shiva — symbolising purity, devotion, and strength. Figures such as this were traditionally placed in domestic shrines or small temples, where prayers and offerings were made to invoke Shiva’s blessings and protection.

Carved from a single block of dense teak, this early example displays an archaic form with simple, powerful contours and deeply incised details along the body and headdress. The wood’s surface, burnished by age and ritual handling, has developed a lustrous patina that reflects centuries of reverence and care.

A rare and evocative piece of South Indian folk art, this Nandi carries a quiet spiritual gravity — equally at home as a devotional object or sculptural accent in a modern interior.
