Description

This characterful 19th-century carved teak khunti from Rajasthan, India, takes the form of a stylised horse's head. Originally used as a wall-mounted hanger for turbans and clothing, it combines an everyday practical function with the decorative appeal of Rajasthani folk art.

Hand-carved from a substantial piece of teak, the khunti features a boldly sculpted horse's head with an arched neck, pointed ears and an expressive face. Incised lines define the bridle and harness, while small punched decorations and geometric borders add further detail. The long, projecting wooden section would originally have been embedded into a wall, leaving the carved horse's head exposed as an ornamental peg.

Known as a khunti in Hindi, these traditional wooden wall pegs were commonly found in the palaces, havelis and homes of wealthier families in Rajasthan. They provided a convenient place to hang turbans, garments and other personal belongings, while their elaborate carved decoration reflected the status and tastes of the household.

The horse holds particular significance in Rajasthani culture, where it has long been associated with nobility, bravery and the martial traditions of the Rajput rulers.

Over a century of age and use has given the teak a beautifully weathered, warm brown patina, with natural cracks, worn edges and traces of the original carved detail contributing to its rustic charm.

Today, this unusual antique khunti makes a fascinating piece of Indian folk art.
