Painted Ganesh Lintel Panel From Kutch - 19th Century

This exceptional 19th century carved wooden lintel panel originates from Kutch in Gujarat, Western India, and once formed part of the architectural decoration above a doorway in a traditional home. Richly hand-carved and retaining traces of its original painted finish, the panel centres around a beautifully detailed depiction of Ganesh, the revered Hindu deity associated with wisdom, protection and good fortune.

Ganesh is framed by scrolling foliate carvings and stylised floral motifs, all executed with remarkable craftsmanship and symmetry. Layers of weathered turquoise, terracotta, ochre and faded red paint remain across the surface, creating a wonderfully textured patina developed through decades of age and exposure. Architectural fragments of this type were traditionally designed not only as decoration but also as auspicious protective symbols within the home.
